SUMMER THOUGHT

“Will Fluffy get to heaven?” the old lady asked, after telling me the harrowing details of the Pekinese’s last illness. I remembered the dog, a small, smelly, vicious beast. Myself, I would not have given odds better than evens for its passing through any pearly gates, doggy or human.

However, the question was put and I did not know what to say. Humans, made in the image of God, are fundamentally different from animals. Animals that behave like people in cartoons are but the products of human imagination. On the other hand, we don’t know what heaven will be like. Jesus died and rose to save all people and to save the world. All creation will be renewed at the end of time. Personally, I do have difficulty with the image of a renewed dog but God must know what he will be doing.

How to put this to the old dear, who was now drying her eyes and looking at me in a way very reminiscent of Fluffy? I said that all creation was in the hands of God and he would do what was best for us all.

If we trust in God most problems are resolved and questions are answered. But do we trust enough?
